In the Palm Beaches and Beyond

 When you walk into this exhibition at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach to see the the work of Akunyili Crosby, it will stop you cold. It is monumental in size, figurative, yet decorative. And the art of this young, Nigerian-born artist captures unique personal and family moments through a combination of photorealism and collage.  Ms. Cosby is able to convey both emotion and information in virtually every painting. She focuses on the two things that matter most to her —her birth country of Nigeria and her husband, Justin Crosby, whom she met in the United States, where she has studied art since she was 17. Looking at the paintings, you feel as if you are peaking at private moments such as when she introduced her husband to her family in Nigeria or when the two are out social dancing. That painting is entitled, "I Refuse to Be Invisible," also the title of the exhibition. One more of Ms. Crosby's objectives is to show the duality in life, nature, emotion, and place. She does that easily in each of her paintings. Don’t miss the opportunity to see her work at the Norton. It will leave you wanting to see more.
