Powerful Hungarian Art Exhibited at Boca Museum

12/29/2016

A Century of Rebellion and Revival is the very apt title of the exhibition of Hungarian art on display for one more week--through January 8--at the Boca Museum. The power and depth of the exhibition may may surprise you. It ranges from abstract to figurative and back again—paralleling virtually every trend in European art. But behind many of the images, the viewer may sense a feeling of the turmoil, anguish and pain that accompanied the struggles of the Hungarian nation for independence starting in the mid 19th century. That dream took over 100 years to achieve.
CAPTIONS: From left to right: Janos Vaszary, Portrait of Countess Ilone Batthyany, 1905; Lazlo Fehrer, Dinner of the Homeless, 2004; Lazlo Feher, Smoking Man, 1998.
The Brinker Collection: This exhibition offers an unparalleled opportunity to peer into the psyche of people caught in a political web. Representational art seems to predominate and much of it reflect a strange atmosphere of worry and resignation--almost a paralysis facing life. Most of the pieces come from the  outstanding collection of Nancy Brinker, former US Ambassador. It may be the last time the collection is shown in the US before Brinker donates it to Hungary. Brinker is also known for the foundation she set up in memory of her sister who died of breast cancer, the Susan B. Omen Foundation.

Hungarian Photography: At the same time, the Boca Museum is offering two Hungary-based photography exhibitions. One exhibition contains the work of 30 photographers and created  in partnership with the Hungarian Museum of Photography. The second is a one-woman exhibition of the work of Hungarian-born photographer Sylvia Plachy who returned from the US, where she now lives, to the country of her birth in 1964 to photograph it.

    Dear  Art Lover:
       Welcome back!
The pandemic shocked and slowed down the art world for many months. But now, artists, museums and galleries have adapted. They are providing new ways for you to enjoy the work of your favorite classic or new artists...and keep on top of cultural trends and developments.
Here in Palm Beach County art venues from the Norton and Boca Raton Museums to the Art Warehouse in Delray Beach have reopened--with new exhibitions and socially distanced, masked viewing opportunities
For those of your still reluctant to venture out (until you have your COVID-19 "shots")--the digital world will enable you to enjoy elements of the collections and exhibitions of prestigious institutions such as the Fricke, as well as opportunities to join docents on art tours from France to China.
So, I'm back again! To let you know what I consider "the best" of all these opportunities. Keep an eye on my blog to enhance your art-viewing pleasure!
